The art of going slowly
There is a particular kind of walk where you cover almost no distance. Every fence post needs investigating. A leaf deserves a second opinion. The corner you passed yesterday is somehow new again.
We used to call these unsuccessful walks. Now we leave a little more time.
The stick collection
By the door, there is a growing collection of sticks. Some are much too long to carry comfortably. One is barely a twig. None of them looked especially remarkable before a dog brought them home.
There is probably a lesson here about paying attention. Mostly, we are running out of space.
A rainy-day ritual
A towel waits by the door. The kettle goes on. Someone shakes water onto the one patch of floor we just cleaned.
Then comes the deep, completely contented sleep of a dog who has been outside. A small reminder that a grey sky can still make a very good day.
